Ska’d For Life – New Mosaic by Carrie Reichardt in Coventry, UK
With the help of the local community, craftivist Carrie Reichardt realised a huge mosaic at Pool Meadow bus station in Coventry (UK). Titled “Ska’d for life”, this music-themed mosaic contains ceramic tiled faces of local musicians, movers and shakers. It’s a celebration of 2-Tone Ska, a sub-genre born in Coventry, whose sound was thin and sharp, dominated by whiny vocals and the kerchunk-kerchunk of the rhythm guitar. However, the mural is not just about 2-Tone and Coventry’s legendary band “Gangsters”, but it also celebrates other musicians, like Delia, the Orchids and those who helped build up the music scene in the community, plus the fanzines, magazines, and the counter-culture that comes before it.
