Italian street artist Ericailcane has just completed a stunning mural at Cagliari’s Galleria del Sale, the urban art project that transformed the pillars of a railway overpass into a vibrant art gallery.
At its 10th edition this year, Cagliari’s Galleria del Sale seeks to transform the cycle-pedestrian path that links the Molentargius Natural Park with the Su Siccu seafront into a genuine art itinerary, with contributions from street artists of both local and international renown. The first street artist who completed his intervention in 2024 was Ericailcane, a pioneer of Italian street art.
On April 25th, marking Italy’s commemoration of liberation from fascism, the street artist Ericailcane unveiled a mural dedicated to Michele Schirru, a Sardinian anarchist sentenced to death for plotting to assassinate Mussolini. Rich in symbolism, the mural not only honors Schirru’s anti-fascist courage but also embodies an anti-militarist stance, serving as a poignant critique of contemporary wars.
Ericailcane started his artistic journey at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna where he met BLU. This meeting sparked a lasting artistic collaboration. From the early 2000s, the duo created clandestine works on Bologna’s squat buildings, utilizing minimalist techniques and black and white paints. These early works already displayed Ericailcane’s talent as an illustrator, particularly his rich repertoire of zoomorphic figures.
Ericailcane’s murals, teeming with animals, narrate stories that ponder universal themes akin to Aesop’s fables, delving into human vulnerabilities. Deeply engaged with the social realities of the places he works, Ericailcane addresses a range of topics from economics to ecology. As an active participant in global urban art festivals and projects, he has emerged as a leading artist and a vital voice in contemporary storytelling.
During the same week, three local street artists painted on the pillars of Galleria del Sale: Daniele Gregorini, who also serves as the project’s curator, along with Paola Corrias and Skan.
