A Detailed Look at the Urban Walks

DAY 1 – On The Edge, At The Core

Thursday, May 8th | From 10:30 to 17:30 (probably longer, tho)

This first itinerary unfolds through five neighborhoods where Lisbon breathes at its own pace. Geographically peripheral yet central to the city’s identity, these areas are defined by local routines, lived-in cafés, garden benches, and everyday life unfolding just beyond the spotlight.

We’ll walk through historic working-class quarters where Lisbon still feels unmistakably itself, and into the largest social housing district in the Iberian Peninsula. Expect large-scale murals, political pieces, traces of early street art, a monumental cemetery, a vibrant food market, and even a panoramic rooftop with 360° views of the city.

DAY 2 – Industrial Traces by the River

Friday, May 9th | From 10:30 to 17:30 (probably longer, tho)

This second itinerary begins at one of Lisbon’s panoramic viewpoints, where the Tagus stretches out below—marking the path of our exploration. As we move through five riverside neighborhoods, the river remains a constant presence, echoing the city’s industrial and maritime past. Graffiti-covered shipyards, abandoned factories, and reconverted industrial spaces line the route. The riverside unfolds through rusted cranes, crumbling warehouses, and massive empty structures—each bearing the marks of a working-class history.

Along the way, industrial ruins and silent machinery speak of a time when this edge of the city was defined by labor, trade, and movement. The atmosphere is distinctly post-industrial: raw, textured, and rich with memory.

DAY 3 – Lisbon’s Creative Neighborhoods

Saturday, May 10th | From 10:30 to 17:30 (probably longer, tho)

This third itinerary takes us through four neighborhoods where artists live, work, and shape the city’s evolving identity. We’ll explore large-scale murals, visit contemporary art galleries inside former warehouses, and step into cultural centers housed in old factories. Along the way, we’ll stop at taprooms to enjoy some of Lisbon’s finest craft beers.

As we move through these creative districts, we’ll reflect on how each is navigating the pressures of urban development and cultural reinvention—though at different paces. Some are seeing a rise in short-term rentals and lifestyle branding, others are being reimagined as hubs of entrepreneurship and artistic innovation, while some continue to push back through community-led initiatives, cultural resistance, and a strong tradition of grassroots expression. What unites them is a shared creative energy—a place where art is not just something to look at, but a way to question, remember, and reshape the city.

DAY 4 – Edges of a New Lisbon

Sunday, May 11th | From 10:30 to 17:30 (probably longer, tho)

This fourth itinerary takes us across Lisbon’s outer districts—areas that have been shaped or reshaped by urban planning efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Each of the four neighborhoods we’ll explore reflects a different chapter in Lisbon’s response to rapid social, economic, and political change. From a district built to showcase the city’s leap into modernity, to large-scale housing projects and one of Lisbon’s most ambitious urban expansion plans, these areas offer a broader view of the city’s evolution.

Once considered peripheral, they are now increasingly connected to the urban core—through infrastructure, housing, and cultural relevance. Along the way, expect to encounter corporate towers, high-rise apartments, social housing blocks, and a diverse urban fabric. And with the airport nearby, we’ll catch glimpses of planes taking off and landing just overhead.

These neighborhoods represent different responses to Lisbon’s urban challenges: from top-down redevelopment to grassroots cultural expression. Together, they reveal a city in motion—constantly reorganizing, redefining, and expanding beyond its postcard image.

DAY 5 – Go West!

Monday, May 12th | From 10:30 to sunset

On our final day, we’ll board the coastal train and head west, leaving Lisbon behind—but not before exploring the area around the train station, a part of the city where contrasts collide: maritime past, creative present, nightlife, and everyday life all layered along the riverfront.

As we follow the coastline toward the Atlantic, we’ll hop on and off the train to discover graffiti-covered walls, trackside tags, and murals that trace the evolution of Lisbon’s street art scene. One of our stops will bring us to the area widely considered the birthplace of graffiti culture in Portugal, where the walls along the train line have long served as a canvas for generations of writers. Our journey ends in a coastal town known for its elegant villas and ocean views, but also for hosting several street art festivals over the years, which have brought international and local artists to paint its walls.

We’ll close the trip by the ocean, as the sun melts into the Atlantic and the light softens over the water—a quiet, golden moment to take in everything we’ve seen. It’s a gentle close to a journey through Lisbon’s outer edges, where the city reveals itself in layers of paint, concrete, and lived experience.
