I’ve had the WOOL Urban Art Festival on my radar for a long time, and this year, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve become the media partner for this highly respected street art festival, the first of its kind in Portugal. I’ll be traveling to Covilhã shortly after the festival, which takes place from June 6 to 16 this year, when the paint is still fresh and the memories are vivid in the hearts of the residents.
My mission is to bring you an in-depth reportage on the incredible impact of the WOOL Urban Art Festival. I’ll be diving into how this vibrant festival breathes new life into the town, creating a strong sense of identity and belonging among the residents. I’ll explore how it reclaims and transforms public spaces, fosters immense community pride, and enriches the cultural fabric of Covilhã.

Introducing WOOL Urban Art Festival
Since its inception in 2011, the WOOL Urban Art Festival has played a transformative role in Covilhã, a Portuguese mountain village with a population of 50,000. Historically known for its textile industry, Covilhã has become home to Portugal’s first urban art festival, which brings together artists, locals, and visitors to celebrate and create urban art.
The festival has turned the city’s landscape into an open-air gallery, significantly boosting local tourism and serving as a model for other cities aiming to leverage urban art for social and economic benefits. The festival attracts artists from around the world, each contributing unique styles and themes that enrich the city’s aesthetic diversity.
The WOOL Urban Art Festival’s international roster of artists brings a variety of cultural perspectives to Covilhã. Each mural tells a different story, reflecting the artist’s background and experiences. This cultural diversity is celebrated during the festival, promoting greater understanding and appreciation among community members for different cultures and artistic expressions.
The festival excels in involving the local community in the creation process, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among residents. This engagement leads to stronger community bonds and increased participation in local activities. Residents participate in workshops, guided tours, and discussions with the artists, encouraging active involvement in the cultural development of their neighborhood.
Additionally, the WOOL Urban Art Festival is renowned for its exceptional educational projects, such as the acclaimed “Lata 65,” which promotes graffiti workshops for senior citizens, helping them gain skills and confidence. These urban art projects serve as educational tools, teaching people about art, history, and social issues. They inspire creativity and provide learning opportunities outside traditional educational settings.
Through workshops and artist talks, the festival offers residents and visitors the chance to learn about different artistic techniques and the significance of urban art.

The performing arts segment is reinforced with the inclusion of contemporary circus:
- Coração nas Mãos: This company will open the festival with their creation, “Chá das Cinco: Ask for Four Friends and One More That Never Arrives.” This performance draws inspiration from Covilhã’s tradition of tea, introduced by English wool merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries.
