The Story of Collettivo FX
In the heart of Italy, amidst the rich cultural tapestry of Reggio Emilia, a group of anonymous artists known as Collettivo FX emerged in December 2010. Born out of a shared frustration over political and social issues among friends, Collettivo FX took a stand by engaging directly with the upheavals of the Arab Spring through their initial posters. This act of involvement set the tone for their future endeavors, deeply embedding social education and workers’ struggle into their artistic practice.
The Ethos of Collettivo FX
At the core of Collettivo FX’s work is the belief that art is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but a powerful tool for dialogue, education, and societal reflection. They aim to provide communities with tools to provoke actions and reactions, emphasizing that while the artwork itself is significant, the operation and activation by the community hold paramount importance.
This collective operates on the principle that art should be accessible to all, transforming public spaces into canvases that narrate stories too important to pass into silence. Their approach embraces a wide spectrum of themes from social justice to environmental sustainability.
A Focus on Political, Environmental and Social Themes
Renowned among the most committed artists in Italy, Collettivo FX has taken their mission beyond mere aesthetic appeal to leverage their art as a powerful tool for storytelling, shedding light on pressing political, social, and territorial issues.
The collective’s commitment to addressing social, political, and environmental issues through art has catalyzed conversations and inspired action in various contexts. From highlighting the challenges of urbanization and environmental degradation to celebrating cultural heritage and advocating for social justice, Collettivo FX’s work prompts reflection and discourse on issues that matter.
Their ability to weave complex narratives into visually compelling art enables them to reach a broad audience, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.
The collective’s discourse, enriched by experiences and dialogues, calls for a reimagined approach to public art, one that transcends conventional boundaries and fosters genuine engagement, reflection, and transformation within communities.
Collettivo FX Bridges Art with Community
Collettivo FX’s narrative and methodological journey encapsulate the evolving dynamics of public art, pushing us to reconsider not just the creation and placement of murals but the deeper societal, cultural, and political contexts they inhabit. Through their work and words, Collettivo FX invites us to ponder the profound impact of art in public spaces and its potential to shape, challenge, and enrich the social fabric of our communities.

Some of My Favorite Projects by Collettivo FX
Collettivo FX has garnered acclaim for their poignant interventions within abandoned spaces. Among their most notable endeavors is their work within the Officine Reggiane, an industrial complex in Reggio Emilia that once thrummed with the lifeblood of manufacturing. By transforming these derelict structures into canvases, Collettivo FX breathes life into the remnants of industrial heritage, crafting a dialogue between the past and the present.
Collettivo FX’s interventions within abandoned spaces go beyond mere artistic expression; they serve as acts of cultural preservation and social commentary, inviting onlookers to ponder the cycles of industry, community, and obsolescence.
The Collettivo FX’s project “Behind every madman there’s a village” (launched in September 2015) is a testament to their innovative approach to engaging communities. By inviting the public to nominate the ‘village madman’ capable of evoking memories, Collettivo FX embarked on an independent tour that touched sixteen stops across ten Italian regions, from the north to the south. This initiative revealed the health of communities through a unique statistical inquiry, emphasizing that while the focus was on the ‘madman,’ the true subject was the village itself. This project underscores Collettivo FX’s commitment to using art as a tool for social and community co-design.
Part of the “Madonne dell’Adesso” (Nowadays Madonnas) project, this mural in Naples’ Sanità Neighborhood shows a black Madonna with two children, blurring the lines between child and angel, good and evil, reflecting the struggle against the area’s haunts and life’s harsh realities.
Collettivo FX’s “Don’t Mix Ghosts with Angels” features a Madonna with Child and an angel at Borgo Vergini’s entrance. This mural encourages residents to overcome inner darkness, portraying a Madonna and Baby Jesus with Afro features, symbolizing social inclusion. Inspired by Naples’ Madonna della Sanità (located in the nearby Santa Maria della Sanità church), the artwork at Borgo Vergini’s entrance underscores values like sharing, acceptance, and prejudice-free rebirth essential for the neighborhood’s renewal.
Collettivo FX challenges the conventional perception of street art as mere decoration, positioning it instead as a vital form of public discourse. Their work illustrates the potential of art to transform public spaces into arenas for cultural exchange, learning, and activism. By reclaiming urban environments as canvases for expression, they imbue cities with meaning, identity, and purpose.
Looking towards the future, Collettivo FX envisions a world where art in public spaces plays a pivotal role in fostering community cohesion, environmental stewardship, and social change. They advocate for a model of public art that is integrated into the fabric of daily life, encouraging individuals to engage with their surroundings in thoughtful and meaningful ways. As the collective continues to evolve, their work remains a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating the transformative power of art to envision and effect change in the world.
